Reserved observation seats open roughly a month ahead and go quickly. Learn how our concierge books verified tickets on your behalf while your private chauffeur handles station luggage delivery.
What you are actually booking
The hill-country line runs from Kandy up through the tea estates to Ella, and not all seats on it are the same thing. Understanding the difference is most of the battle.
- Reserved first class observation — assigned seats, large windows, usually air-conditioned. The most comfortable option and the first to disappear.
- Reserved second class — assigned seats, windows that open. Many regulars prefer this to first class precisely because the windows open.
- Unreserved second and third class — no seat guarantee, buy on the day. This is the carriage with the open doorways you have seen in photographs.
Carriage composition varies between services, so the exact mix depends on which train you take. We confirm what is available on your date when you enquire.
When to book
Reserved seats open roughly a month before departure and the popular services go quickly — often the same day the window opens. The exact advance period and release time have changed more than once over the years, and differ between counter and online sales, so we do not plan around a fixed number.
What matters practically: tell us your dates as early as you can. We lodge the request before the window opens rather than scrambling afterwards.
Which leg to ride
You do not have to ride the whole line. The most scenic stretch is the upper section through the tea country, and a shorter leg is often the better choice — particularly with children or anyone who tires of sitting.
The full Kandy-to-Ella run is a long day in a seat. Boarding partway up gives you the best scenery for a fraction of the duration, and leaves time to actually see Ella when you arrive. Your chauffeur can meet you at whichever station suits.
How we handle the booking
- 1You confirm your travel dates with us at enquiry.
- 2We lodge the reservation request ahead of the booking window opening.
- 3Tickets are purchased as soon as the window opens.
- 4Confirmed tickets are sent to you on WhatsApp before you travel.
- 5On the day, your chauffeur drops you at the departure station, takes the luggage by road, and meets you on the arrival platform.
infoIf reserved seats are gone
It is not a disaster. Unreserved second or third class is the same route, the same views, and the open doorways people travel here for — you simply board early and may stand for part of it. Your chauffeur can also drive the parallel road, which is scenic in its own right, and we will tell you honestly which we would do.
What to bring
- A warm layer. The highland stations are genuinely cold, which surprises people who boarded in the tropics.
- Small change for the vendors who work the carriages with tea and snacks.
- A day bag only — your chauffeur has the rest.
- Motion sickness tablets if you are prone to it. The line twists continuously.
